What Is a Wildcard in Fantasy Premier League – And When Should You Use It?
The Wildcard is one of the most powerful tools in Fantasy Premier League. It lets you make unlimited transfers in a gameweek without taking any points hits.
Think of it as a free reset button for your team — but with strategic consequences.
🧠 How Does the Wildcard Work?
Normally, you get 1 free transfer each gameweek. If you make more, you lose 4 points per extra transfer.
But with the Wildcard chip, you can completely rebuild your team — change all 15 players if you like — and still keep your full score.
🗓️ When Can You Use the Wildcard?
You get two Wildcards per season:
- First Wildcard: Available from Gameweek 1 to Gameweek 20.
- Second Wildcard: Becomes available from Gameweek 21 and must be used before the season ends.
You can’t stack Wildcards — if you don’t use the first one before the deadline, it’s gone.
💡 When Should You Play Your Wildcard?
Here are a few smart moments:
- Your team is a mess after injuries or red cards.
- You missed out on key bandwagons and price rises.
- A major fixture swing is coming (e.g. top teams have easy runs).
- Planning for Double Gameweeks or Blank Gameweeks.
Timing is everything — a well-played Wildcard can boost your season. A rushed one? Not so much.
⚠️ Wildcard Rules You Should Know
- Once activated, your transfers are free only until that week’s deadline.
- After the deadline, you’re back to regular rules.
- You can’t cancel a Wildcard once confirmed.
- It’s different from the Free Hit chip (which resets your team just for 1 gameweek).
